Anambra State House of Assembly has urged the state governor, Willie Obiano to direct the Anambra State Waste Management Authority (ASWAMA) to evacuate the refuse heap at Ugwuorie market/St. Michael junction, Ozobulu in Ekwusigo council area.

The state lawmakers, who lamented that the stench oozing from the debris, constitute health challenges to residents and passersby, recalled that section 6 (1) of the ASWAMA law 2015 provides that collection, removal and safety disposal of domestic, hospital, commercial, institutional and industrial waste is one of the core functions of ASWAMA.

The call came at the heels of the motion moved by the member representing Ekwusigo State Constituency, Hon Onyebuchi Offor and 18 others, and supported by Hon Vivian Okadigbo of Oyi state constituency.

Offor, who is also the House Minority Leader, explained that the refuse heap when emptied would prevent spreading of diseases, as well as contribute to the state economy when recycled to serve as raw materials for production of other items.

Contributing, Hon. Vivian Okadigbo; Hon. Ikem Uzoezie; Hon Pita Ibida; Hon. Obinna Emenaka, and others, while underscoring the importance of sanitation and clean environment, maintained that ASWAMA has no reason not to perform its official duty which it is also paid for by people.
