A heavy down pour of Monday which was arguably the first rain of the year has reportedly swept away Camry car along Ochanja Market, Onitsha South Local Government Area of the state.
The flood water which was said to have destroyed goods worth millions of naira in the area when the flood overran the drainage channel at Iweka Road and some adjoining streets also pulled down an electric pole standing in front of EEDC office, GRA, Onitsha when it reportedly uprooted a large tree in the area which incidentally hit the electric pole.
It was, however, gathered that no life was lost in the rampaging flood. But an eyewitness told our reporter that the first heavy rain of the year which had long been expected after raining heavily in neighboring cities of Asaba and some communities in Ayamelum Local Government of the state left the commercial town of Onitsha filthy as waste products from filled drainages littered the streets.
A similar incident was also reported at Obodo Ukwu Road, Okpoko, Ogbaru Local Government Area of the state .Though the incident was denied by the President- General of Okpoko community, Hon. Linus Ezenwamma.
Hon Ezenwamma who spoke to our reporter on telephone said no such incident of destruction of property had been reported in the area. According to the community leader, ”The task force on environmental sanitation has been doing a wonderful job since the inauguration of the committee. The streets are now cleaner than it was before this administration. We only require the local government to intervene by creating more refuse dumps for the community. We’ll continue to sensitize the residents on the danger in littering the drainages with refuse”, he stated.
