Not fewer than two persons have been killed by a gas explosion incident at Nkwelle Ezunaka community in Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The fire disaster which occurred when a tanker laden with gas was being discharged around 11a.m. at Onochie Nnanna filling station, injured two persons, even as it razed multi-million naira properties and documents to dust.

Speaking to, an eye witness who escaped the inferno by the whiskers, Nnamdi Okafor, confirmed the dead as the driver of the tanker (name unknown) and Nwigwe Ezenwoke, an indigene of Abia state, whose academic documents show that he just finished his NYSC service at Ibadan.

Okafor, who is a landlord of two of the buildings close to the gas station which were burnt beyond recognition, disclosed that he, his family and their tenants escaped unhurt without any of their belongings.

He however, hailed the fire service officers at Okpoko in Onitsha, who he said responded with their fire equipment some minutes the fire started and immediately got the situation under control.

“All my property and those of my tenants were completely lost in the fire disaster. But what pains me most is the loss of Eze, who I always call my son. Eze was loved by everybody in this neighbourhood. He relates well to us all including the owner of the gas station, Onochie Nwokike. We are all in tears.”

Speaking earlier, a security man at the gas station, Harrison Alphonsus, explained that one of the victims (Nwigwe) only came on a rescue mission but lost his life in the process.

“I did not lose my life during the incident like Nwigwe because I ran away after the victim had collected the fire extinguisher from me… They were taken to orthopedic hospital in Enugu which was where they gave up the ghost. But those injured remained hospitalised with varied degrees of burn” he alleged.
