My people are after my life, Anambra businessman cries out

Okechukwu Onuegbu

A businessman in Anambra state, Mr Sunny Ebunam has raised alarm alleging threats to his life by some persons led by a community leader in Nkpor, Mr Chibuzor Okeke for no reasons.
State police Commissioner

Ebunam told newsmen on Wednesday at his hometown of Obosi in Idemili North Local Government Area that on Aug. 3, 2016, armed youths from Nkpor numbering about 15 attacked and shot at some other unarmed Obosi youths who were standing in front of his office close to an ongoing building site.

Narrating his ordeal, he said while in his office at Casta Diva Hotel, Obosi, the gunshots started at about 12:41pm, during which he called the Divisional Police Officer in-charge of Obosi.

Ebunam further alleged the armed youths had invaded the site and shot his in-law, Mr Julian Chukwura who was supervisor of the project on the chest and legs, and left him in his pool of blood, adding that they also destroyed his sign post and attempted to burn down his office, but God intervened and the fire was put out.

He claimed that the armed youths catered away his in-law’s Casio wrist watch valued at $1, 300; N10, 000 cash and his phone.

Ebunam said that a combined team of police from Obosi division and Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) later arrived and chased the armed youths who took to their heels.

He said the suspects made confessional statements to SARS at Awkuzu,, but expressed surprise that a police officer from Zone 9, Umuahia came and took the suspects away with the files, claiming that the AIG was interested in the matter.

Ebunam who said that Chukwura was later taken to hospital for treatment, however urged the police to charge the matter to court for the law to take its course.

But in his reaction, Okeke denied his involvement in the alleged attack, accusing Ebunam of trying to tarnish his long standing image which was being carried out in connivance with some of his Nkpor kinsmen.

While claiming that he knew nothing about the attack, Okeke said the only issue we have with Ebunam is the ownership of a road in front of his hotel leading to my community.

Okeke who is the chairman of Abommili Mbachu community in Nkpor said he only got to know about it at the palace of the traditional ruler of Obosi, Igwe Chidubem Iweka who invited me and Ebunam for reconciliation.

Okeke said Abommili community of Nkpor negotiated for the access road from Mr Nwaolisa Emordi and Chidebe Emordi from Obosi even before Ebunam bought his land to build his hotel.

“They granted us the access and we graded the road but since Ebunam arrived, he has been terrorizing members of the community, collecting tolls and dictating who uses the road,” he alleged.

Confirming the report, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in-charge of Obosi, CSP Ibrahim Musa disclosed that nine persons were arrested and handed over to SARS, Awkuzu in connection with the incident.

“The matter is between Nkpor and Obosi people; some people from Obosi may have connived with some people from Nkpor to cause the crises,” he said, saying investigation was still ongoing”, Musa noted.
