Following the country’s existing economic hardship, residents of Awka, the capital of Anambra State have started lamenting over the persistent high cost of food stuff in the market. market survey aimed at unraveling the pulse of the high cost of living on the people shows that a bag of rice previously sold for N12, 500 now stood for N19, 500, while a painter of Garri, formerly sold for N300 now cost N600.

Also, the price of a yam tuber earlier sold for N250 has risen to between N450 to N500, even as bag of beans has skyrocket from N15, 000 to N31, 000 thereby causing the sellers to sold its painter measurement for N1, 5000.

It was further observed that a bag of sachet water (pure water) now stood at N130, packet of maggi N350, 5 balls of tomatoes paste (N200), a bunch of ugu (pumpkin leaves) risen from N50 to N100, while the washed bitterleaf (onugbu) have become as expensive as N100.
That was even as traders complained of low patronage from buyers, and called on relevant authorities to expedite action towards bringing the price of goods to normalcy so as to record more buyers.

Speaking in an interview, Mrs Angela Nwogbo, a house wife bewailed the increase of the price of food items, which according to her, gets worse every day, and charged the agencies responsible for price regulations to nip the ugly situation to bud.

On their parts, a petty trader, Mrs Chukwuneye Obi, and Mrs. Lizzerus Ugochukwu, while attributing the hike in prices of beans and yams to cattle rustlers’ onslaught that scare farmers away from farm, called on government to resolve the issue in order to allow farmers to continue with their farming.

They further posited that as a result of the high cost of essential goods and commodities, there had been low patronage as the price changes everyday due to increase in food stuff in the market.

However, one Mr chibuzor Anyaegbuna, a civil servant, while urging the populace to feed before thinking of pleasure as there was little or no cash in the country, ascribed the hike in some food items like yam to increase in its demand by youths keying into agricultural sector to enhance Maximum productivity across the state.
