ASUBEB celebrates cultural festival in Anambra



The premises of Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board [ASUBEB], Awka, erupted in great joy recently as activities marking the 2015 cultural festival took the centre stage to the admiration of lovers of igbo culture and tradition.


The event entitled ''Igbo Cultural Day'' was organised by Igbo Language and Culture section of the board aimed at re-awakening the consciousness of Ndigbo to their tradition root, values and norms.

In a speech, Chairman on the occasion, Chief Onuorah J.C, described the event as apt especially now Igbo culture needed to be promoted and sustained for posterity sake.

He said the initiative is a signpost of hope for cultural revival among youths in various schools in the state, because according to him, rich cultural heritage should always be transmitted to future generations.

Speaking in a welcome address, the Desk Officer, Igbo Language and Culture, ASUBEB, Mrs Ngozi Okoye, disclosed that annual  festival was the brainchild of the board through support services provided by ''Otu Suwakwa Igbo'' headed by Prof Pita Ejiofo.

She therefore urged Ndigbo not to neglect their culture and tradition, stressing that parents, guardians and teachers should encourage their children to speak more of Igbo Language than English.

The Desk Officer added that the event was carefully packaged to promote Igbo traditional lifestyle, custom and belief system with a view to mainstream it into the lives of the up coming generation.

While urging all to key into efforts being made to save Igbo language from going into extinction, she appealed for support to enable them to carry-out more of such activities for the betterment of the society.

On her part, Mrs Elizabeth Enwuzie, who represented the State Commissioner for Education, Prof kate Omenugha said the festival had showcased rich cultural heritage of the igbo race, pointing out that her ministry was doing all it could to revive dying culture in schools within the state.

Highpoint on the occasion were, public presentation of ASUBEB dance group''UMUNMA'', Match past by participating schools from local government areas, New yam festival, presentation of trophies and certificates and cultural displays.
