Traditional Rulers Commends State Assembly as they passed a bill for a law to amend the Anambra State Group Vigilante Law 2014

The Anambra State Traditional Rulers have extolled the State House of Assembly members for passing into law, a bill for a law to amend the Anambra State Group Vigilante Law 2014.

The Executive bill, which was passed into law after a debate on it by the lawmakers during plenary, was previously passed in 2014 only to be sent back by the executive for further amendments in certain sections that prevented it from functioning effectively.

In the old law, Heritage reliably gathered, the state supervisory council appoints vigilante Chairmen from each community but in the amended bill, the Chairman of Anambra State Vigilante Group Supervisory Committee now appoints the Chairmen of Vigilante Groups in the state.

It also provided that the Chairman of Anambra State Group Vigilante Supervisory Committee must be a Traditional Ruler or His Representative, a man of integrity and impeccable character and resident in the state for fifteen years, while the President-General of a community will be the Secretary-General of the Vigilante Group Supervisory Committee.

The Speaker of the Assembly, Rt. Hon. Barrister Rita Maduagwu, while passing it into law, charged vigilante groups to work with the police in policing the state adequately so as to help in providing adequate security for the lives and properties of the citizenry.

Reacting in separate interviews shortly after a meeting at government house in Awka, the Traditional Rulers of Umunze, Orumba South Local Government Area, Igwe Promise Eze, and his counterparts from Enugwu-Umuonyia, Igwe Peter Nebechukwu, Igwe Dr Cyril Nwabunwanne of Umuoji, and Igwe Dr Martins Eze of Igboukwu described the new law as a panacea to addressing insecurity, even as they stressed that it explicitly distinguished the power of the monarchs and President Generals.

The royal majesties, who added that they are the Chief Security of their respective communities in accordance to the law, tradition and custom of the land, further called for a collaborative effort with the PGs and the entire populace to steering the sheep of Anambra Vigilante Group with a view to wiping out miscreants in the state as envisaged by the State Governor, Chief Willie Obiano.
