1,165,950 women of child bearing age, others to benefit from Anambra maternal, newborn and child health week

Not fewer than 1,165,950 women of child bearing age in Anambra State are to benefit from the first round weeklong maternal, newborn and child health week slated to hold between Monday 29th June to Friday 3rd July 2015 by the state ministry of health in partnership with WHO, UNICEF and others.

The State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joe Akabuike, who disclosed this in a media briefing, on Thursday, listed other beneficiaries to include a total population of 900,970 children between 6 to 59 months; 211,993 children of 0-11 months; and 264, 90050.

According to Dr. Akabuike, the children under one year will receive pneumococcal conjugate vaccine, pentavalent vaccine and inactivated polio vaccine; while children of 9 months old shall be administered with measles and yellow fever vaccines; even as pregnant and child bearing women age shall garner tetanus toxoid.

He listed other additional gains to include receiving of long lasting insecticidal treated nets to prevent malaria, health education on key household practices including exclusive breastfeeding, adequate complementary feeding, hygiene, management of childhood illness, scale up integration and delivery of other child survival interventions, boost routine immunization coverage, register birth, etc. with a view to ensuring the sustenance of break in the transmission of wild polio virus in the state.

While noting that the exercise was geared towards delivering an integrated package of preventive and curative health interventions services known to be highly cost effective and result oriented, the Health Commissioner explained that all vaccines to be given are free and safe, and urged caregivers to avail themselves of the great opportunity by visiting the designated health care service centers at their various locations.
