Tension in Awka As Gov. Obiano Sacks Ex-Obi Nominated Commissioners, Appoints His Royalists

Five appointed commissioners present

Anambra State House of Assembly has confirmed five Commissioners out of six nominated by the State Governor, Chief Willie Obiano.

Chief Obiano is allegedly nursing ambition to sack some of his cabinet members who were nominated by his predecessor, Mr. Peter Obi so as to pave way for emergency of his royalists.  

The nominees, who were sent to the hallow chamber on Friday, were the outgoing Speaker, Rt. Hon. Chinwe Nwaebili; Mr. Frank Offor; Mrs. Amaka Ilobi; Mrs. Obianuju Nwogu; Mr. Mark Okoye and Mr. Afam Mgbemena.

However, Mr. Mark Okoye, who is the current SSA to Gov. Obiano on Investment, Entrepreneur, and Secretary to the Governing Council of ANSIPPA, was not approved.

While the five nominees were present to defend selves at the sitting, Speaker Nwaebili, who was APGA candidate for 2015 Ogbaru Federal Constituency but lost the race to her PDP counterparts, was absent.

After carefully studying the curriculum vitae of Mr. Okoye, the state legislators disqualified the gentleman citing section 192 (5) to that effect. Mr. Okoye is 29 years old against 30 as stipulated in the constitution, but will expectedly clock 30 by June.

Explaining stands of the House, the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Chukwudi Orizu, who presided over the plenary due to the Speaker’s absent, explained that inasmuch the gentleman will be 30 same June the new cabinet would be inaugurated, his own confirmation will be then.

In his reaction, Mr. Mike Okoye, while extolling the state legislatures over their decision, maintained that he was ever ready to serve the state to its fullness once approved as Commissioner.   

Although the designated portfolios of the new cabinet were not made public, unconfirmed reports says that some of the Commissioners allegedly nominated by the erstwhile Mr. Peter Obi prior to his exist will be sacked to create vacuum for the new ones who are to be inaugurated on June.

The alleged to be sacked Commissioners are the State Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Mr. Tony Onyima; Tony Nnaecheta, the Commissioner for Youths and Sports; the Commissioner for Works, Sir Callistus Ilozumba; Alex Ejesieme; and Nnamdi Mekoh, the Comm. for Agriculture.Top of Form
