Onitsha Bridge Head Market petitions Obiano over heavy taxation

Worried by the spate of corruption and lack of development at Bridge –Head Market, Onitsha, a major stakeholder in the market, Sir Robert Ozugbo has appealed to Anambra state Governor, Chief Willie Obiano to as a matter of urgency set-up a high-powered Investigation Panel to probe the activities of revenue collectors in the large market as the state government was losing a lot of revenue accruing to it owing to the fraudulent activities of some government officials by convincing with the market leadership led by one Mr. Ambrose Osakwe.

Sir Ozugbo who is also the founder of the Freedom League (FRELIG), an association saddled with the campaign for the rights and welfare of traders in the state observed with dismay how the state government had lost funds which he said runs into several billions of Naira which were allegedly being diverted into privates pockets, remitting only a paltry sum into the state government coffers.

He revealed that all the market line chairmen and secretaries allegedly pocket 10% of the entire revenue collected by them, stating that the same  instituted corruption applies to all the revenue collection mechanism in the entire markets in Anambra State.

The activist stated that more worrisome was a situation whereby traders are compelled to pay such revenue in cash without going through the banks which give the impression that there was something wrong with the entire accounting system of revenue collection and funds remittance.

Sir Ozugbo who is a patron of Bridge –Head market which comprises about twenty –six market associations with various trades stated that the group was in court to challenge corruption and illegal imposition of a caretaker chairman for the market which the government agents allegedly uses to arbitrarily siphon funds meant for the development of the entire state.

He, however, appealed to the state governor, Chief Willie Obiano to call the commissioner for Industries, Commerce and Trade, Chief Ifeatu Onebunne to order as he was being used by some traders to insult and castigate elders in the market for speaking out against perceived corruption and injustice on fellow traders of Onitsha Bridge – Head market
