NANS Caution Students to stay off politics

National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) joint campus committee Ebonyi State comprising of Ebonyi State University, Federal College of Agriculture, Ishiagu, Federal Polytechnic,  Uwana and
Ebonyi State College of Education has warned students in tertiary institutions in Ebonyi State to stay clear of partisan politics.
NANS issued the warning in Abakaliki after its meeting of Wednesday November 26, 2014 during which the association examined reports from the state campuses when it discovered that some students hide under
the umbrella of NANS to adopt politicians contesting for various political positions.
In a five paragraph communiqué signed by the Chairman of NANS JCC Ebonyi State Chapter, Comrade Eze Paul Ituma,SUG Presidents, Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki, Comrade Ngwu Deborah, Federal
Polytechnic, Uwana, Comrade Odeh Ikechukwu, Federal  College of Agriculture, Ishiagu, Comrade Chibuike Ogba and Federal College of Education, Ikwo, Comrade Nwali threatened to deal decisively with any student found to be culpable of the act.

It reads in part, “that it has come to the knowledge of the students’
community that some individuals who are not genuine students have so
far indulged in the habit of hiding under the umbrella of students to
achieve their selfish and self centered aim. They do so unilaterally
adopting politicians for one position or the other. Therefore, we warn
that such individuals should desist from defacing the image of
Nigerian students.
“That bearing in mind that students do not belong to any political
party as a body, we wish therefore, to bring to the knowledge of the
public that we have not adopted nor endorsed any aspirant seeking any
political position. However, if there should be any adoption or
endorsement for any position by the students’ community, such will be
done after different political parties must have done their primary
elections.
“Nevertheless, such endorsement or adoption shall be centered on
merit, devoid of sentiment and sectionalism but can only be through
proper evaluation of candidates.
“On the other hand, students are barred from unilaterally adopting or
endorsing aspirants for any position under the umbrella of students’
community. Accordingly, any violation with respect to the above
subject matter by an individual or group of individuals shall be seen
as an affront to the students’ community. Consequently, such person(s)
shall be seen as enemies of the students and would therefore be
treated as such”, it stated.
