Anambra: Governor Obiano's Wife Distributes food items, others to blind and dump

Okechukwu Onuegbu
Wife of Anambra State Governor, Chief Ebele Obiano, yesterday, played her motherly role when she embarked on tour of specialized schools in Anambra State to identify and give the less privileged a sense of belonging.
The schools visited were Basden Memorial Special Education Centre, Isulo in Orumba South Council Area, Special Education Centre, Umuchu in Aguata Council Area, as well as a visit to see a recovered abandoned baby boy admitted at Zion Hospital and Maternity, Enugwu-Ukwu.
Mrs. Obiano also donated food stuff to the schools management, including bags of rice, beans, vegetable oil, salt, one cow and N50,000 each to the principals for pupils welfare.
Commissioning a water borehole project constructed and completed personally by the first Lady at Basden Memorial Education Centre, Mrs. Obiano appealed to philanthropist and good spirited Anambra citizens to come to the aid of the pupils, remanding that they were not the cause of their predicament.
She frowned at state of the school environment which is littered with dilapidated and collapsed buildings, but quickly recalled that her gesture was in fulfillment of her earlier promise during a visit to the school two months ago.
“I realized that some of their greatest challenges were lack of portable water: where they travelled over 2kms in search of water, poor feeding and infrastructure. Even the condition of the school is highly deplorable.
“For the fact that they were handicapped does not warrant such abandonment, they are human beings and must be attended to by all of us.
“Those with sight challenges can be trained through Braille reading, the dump through sound education” she submitted.”
Mrs. Obiano said on her own effort, she decide to provide the school with borehole for portable and hygienic water and also rehabilitate the dormitory and classroom blocks to make them feel comfortable.
She lamented the abandonment of construction work by contractors and some people who claimed to be representing donor agencies, accusing them of not doing the job, adding that, “They only rushed to the school this morning to pretend doing some work on hearing about my visit.
In a welcome address, the school administrative secretary, Mrs. Ebere Ichoku regretted that ex-Governors never visited the school since its inception 18 years ago, and commended Mrs. Obiano for her efforts and gifts, especially cash to the children, staff and the school in general.
She appealed for more assistance in the areas of funding, arguing that subvention of N580.00 monthly is very poor, upgrading of feeding allowance of N50,000 monthly, saying that the current daily feeding allowance of N33 a day per pupil or N11,000 per meal is not encouraging.
Mrs. Ichoku also complained of dilapidated structures, and lamented that roofs of school library, refectory, workshop and staff quarters etc. were all leaking and urgently needs attention.
Some students including, Nnemeka Unagbu cry 6 a Uju Okonkwo who spoke to our reporter thanked Mrs. Obiano for her gifts, saying she has remembered the poor and nearly forgotten citizens of Anambra.
Master Unaegbu said, “God has used our mother to bring joy and happiness to us. We appreciate her efforts”, and prayed God to guide and protect her throughout her stay in the government lodge.
Also at the Special Education Centre,  Umuchi, Her Excellency, Mrs. Obiano assured the management that whatever is due to them will be given, beginning with the new administration, emphasizing that the days’ event is to improve lives of “our children and the coming generation”, and give them hope of belonging.
She also promised to explore possibility of recruiting a computer instructor to the make good of the schools bus and not for somebody to convert it into personal use.
Earlier in his welcome address, the school principal, Mr. Sunday S. Nwafor reeled out  their needs, such as teaching equipment, funds, electricity etc to run the school effectively, as he hailed Mrs. Obiano for being the first among Governors wives to visit the school since its foundation in 1997.
Mr. Nwafor said, “We are in dire need of water, electricity, clinic, renovation of classrooms, teachers and additional care giver to help cater for the pupils”, stressing that the pupils need help because of the nature and condition of their physical appearance.
In another development, Mrs. Obiano paid a visit to see an abandoned male baby admitted at Zion Hospital and maternity, Enugwu-ukwu and promised to offset the bill for treatment.
Speaking at the hospital yesterday, she promised to absorb the baby into the Obiano family if nobody comes forward for his adoption.
In an interview, the doctor on call, Dr. Oliver Onwuhalu said the baby was just 18 hours old, weighing 28kg when they brought him to the hospital yesterday. “He will be circumcised in this evening and we are getting ready to discharge him” the doctor said, and commanded Her Excellency for paying the timely visit.
End.
