al-Qaida kills 11 soldiers in early morning attack

Security officials say al-Qaida militants have attacked an army post southeast of Yemen's capital Sanaa, killing 11 soldiers and one civilian.
The officials say the attack early Thursday took place in the Neehan area in the province of Shabwa, but had no other details. Five more soldiers were wounded in the attack, said the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.
The U.S. considers al-Qaida's branch in Yemen to be among the terror network's most dangerous, and has in recent years launched drone strikes against its leading figures. It is also assisting Yemen's counterterrorism forces with training and logistics.
