The crisis arising from the struggle  by the competing forces for the vice chancellorship of Nnamdi Azikiwe University,Awka has deepened with Prof. Gregory Nwakoby,a key contender for the position accusing some members of the Governing Council of the University of subverting the selection process and demanding bribe of N30 million from him.

Nwakoby who claimed that he took part in the selection process for the vice chancellor's post and later allegedly emerged as top contender with 80.65 percent mark said yesterday that he is being denied the UNIZIK vice chancellorship because he refused to offer gratification of N60 million to some Council members .

Nwakoby,a professor of law and former Dean of the Faculty of Law of UNIZIK and currently the Deputy Vice Chancellor incharge of Administration, who had earlier taking part in the selection exercise held on 24th May,2014 reacting to the whole thing, told the anxious journalists yesterday that the alleged voting exercise involving the council members on Monday the 26th of May at which the person who he said previously came second was adjudged first and the best was illegal and untenable.

Speaking on his grievances,
Nwakoby alleged that some people are working against him because he refuse to give out money and bribe them.

He elaborated on his position, saying,"I am not worthy to be the VC because I have refused to give out money.I have chosen to challenge the charade they did yesterday during which the person that came second before was now declared the winner".

Claiming that he has won the contest for the Vice Chancellorship before the Council proceeded and allegedly declared his rival as the winner, Nwakoby challenged the Governing Council to give him his certificate of return as the vice chancellor of UNIZIK.

Nwakoby who asked President Jonathan to dissolve the council of UNIZIK for allegedly being partial,
threatened that he will go to court over the issue.

He stressed that the prevailing rule in the appointment of vice chancellors is to the effect that once the interview and screening processes have ended and the result published, the person that emerges with the highest number of point would be made a vice chancellor and that such thing has never been subjected to any voting process.

Calling for urgent remedial action,
Nwakoby said,"We can not afford to allow this type of situation to prevail, this Council must be dissolved,I want the Minister to dissolve this Council and give me my rightful position"

Already, the National Youths Council,Anambra State chapter led by Ambassador Chibuzo Ekwenye
have thrown their support for Nwakoby saying that they will take to the streets to protest if the property thing is not done.

Addressing journalists in Awka yesterday,Ekwenye said they are reacting whoever emerges there as Vice Chancellor will spervise the affairs of thousands of youths.

However, Mr. Emmanuel Ojukwu, UNIZIK's Director of Public Relations, on Monday, announced the appointment of Prof Joseph Eberendu Ahaneku as new VC, saying he beat two
other contestants, Prof. Greg Nwakoby and Prof Ben Osisioma, to the position.

Ahaneku is the current deputy Vice-Chancellor
(Academics) of the university, while Nwakoby is the deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration); but Prof Osisioma who reportedly received no vote due to his religious is from the Department of Accounting.

The appointment of a new vice-chancellor had
been deadlocked since Friday last week when
the Council of the university was to announce
its decision on who the new helmsman is.
Ojukwu said Ahaneku will assume office on June
3, 2014. He hails from Imo State.
He will be taking over from Prof. Boniface
Egboka, who has been vice-chancellor since
June 2008 after he took over from Prof. Ilochi
Okafor.
Unizik is the second most sought after
university in Nigeria based on the number of
applicants that pick it as their first university
of choice.
He said that it was wrong and vexatious for eleven members of the council to sit on Monday the 26th of May and conducted what he described as an illegal voting exercise at which his closest rival was declared winner of the vice chancellorship,as according to Nwakoby, when the selection exercise had indeed ended with himself (Nwakoby) emerging winner on the 24th of May.
Congrat to the MBISE, born new VC and first IMO man to clinch such power
