Nigerian Police reassures peaceful Democrace celebration

The Inspector General of Police Mohammed Abubakar has ordered the ...Abuja - The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Abubakar, has assured the citizens that effective security measures had been put in place towards ensuring a hitch-free Democracy Day celebration.

According a press statement by Frank Mba, Force Public Relations Officer, the IGP gave this assurance during a brief closed door meeting with his Management Team at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

Mba said Mohammed also directed all Zonal Assistant Inspectors-General of Police, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in-charge of Intelligence, Command Commissioners of Police and the Commissioners of Police in-charge of the various Police Special Squads such as the Counter Terrorism Unit, Police Mobile Force and Special Protection Unit (SPU) to be on high alert and ensure effective and strategic deployment of all Police personnel.

He added that the IGP promised the citizenry of the total commitment and focus of the Nigeria Police along with other security agencies towards ensuring the safety and security of the citizenry at all times.

He also called on all Nigerians to remain vigilant and security conscious against the backdrop of the security challenges confronting the country.

Democracy Day is a public holidayheld annually on May 29. Itcommemorates the restoration of democracy when the newly-elected Olusegun Obasanjo took office as the President of Nigeria, ending the multiple decades of military rule that began in 1966 and had been interrupted only by a brief period of democracy from 1979 to 1983.
