NUJ calls for investigation into cause of murdered Anambra newspaper vendor

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has condemned the killing of a Sun Newspaper agent in Onitsha, Mr Fabian Obi, who was murdered by unknown gunmen on Monday.

NUJ, who reacted through its Vice Chairman (Zone C), which comprises five states of Southeast, Comrade Chris Isiguzo, said it was tragic and troubling considering the ongoing military operation code-named "Python Dance 11" aimed at checking the rising wave of armed robberies, kidnapping and other forms of crimes.

The union called on the security agencies to immediately swing into action and fish out those behind the dastardly act as it was not ready to allow it goes the way of other similar unresolved cases in the past.

It further reminded the Anambra state government the needs to uphold its primary responsibility to protect lives and properties of the people, insisting that not paying attention to it now the state was preparing for gubernatorial poll could be pathetic.

news48hrs.com recalled that on Monday, armed robbers operating on a motorcycle shot and killed a circulation representative of the Sun Newspapers, Fabian Obi, in his office in Onitsha at about 10.25 am.

It was gathered that the robbers may have acted on information as the circulation staff was making preparation to move monies realised from the sales of the previous days newspapers.

It was also learnt that the robbers after shooting Obi three times around the chest took away money in his possession.

Confirming the incident, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Nkeiruka Nwode, said the command was on the trail of the suspects, assuring that they must be apprehended and made to face the law.

She commiserated with the Sun Newspapers and the family of the deceased and assured residents of protection of their lives and property.
The body of the deceased had been deposited at the Boromeo Hospital morgue.
