The resident of popular Kwata community in Awka South Local Government Area, of Anambra State has continued to lodge complain over the purported dumping of refuse in the area.

The resident who blamed the indiscriminate dumping of refuse on the Anambra State Waste Management Agency (ASWAMA) in charge of disposing waste in the area this made known when news48hrs.com visited the area recently.

The residents of the area lamented over the position where the ASWAMA had kept the waste bin in the area, adding that it has generated a lot of health issues to them, their kids as well as the customers coming to patronise them.

One of the shop owner in the area who deals on wholesale of soft drinks who gave his name as Emmanuel Udu said that he had personally complained to ASWAMA about the refuse dump in the area but the agency has failed to listen to his plead.

“ASWAMA people has chosen to be silent about the issue to the utter dismay of residents.

“If we ask them to relocate the box, they will tell to provide a land where they will keep it

“Most times I leave my shop because the smell coming from the refuse is so repugnant that no one can stand it most especially this raining season” he lamented.

Another resident in the area by the name Amara Ani, who deals on provisions decried the state of refuse in the area saying that it cost her 11 months daughter sickness not to mention herself.

“I am begging the ASWAMA and government to come to our aid because all effort we have made to that has been neglected.

“You need to come here when rain falls, every places will be litred with refuse to the detriment of health and that of our business.

“Help us tell them (government) to come to our aid because this my means of livelihood and the refuse box here has chased all our customers away because of the nasty smells emanating from the waste dump” she narrated.

Also speaking on the issue, Bossey Adeyemi, a shop owner cum resident of the region expressed her dissatisfaction on the waste box purportedly dumped by the ASWAMA officials where human beings are living.

In her words Adeyemi said: “This waste bin here has continued to chase my customers away and even myself because of the odour that it produces. When rain falls, flood carries the dirt to the front of my shop making the shop not conducive for business”, she revealed

“The government should regulate the dumping of refuse in the area and perhas bring in task force to monitor the indiscriminate dumping of refuse.

“The privileged indigenes and other stakeholders who ply the route have continued to act blind to the abnormal dumping of refuse in a neighbourhood”, she added.

Narrating his ordeal, Ebube Edeh who make furniture in the area said that the experience they have had so far is nothing to share home since the past one year he opened his shop.

“The ASWAMA has been reluctant to listen to removing the waste box.

“The problem is that I cannot relocate my shop for the waste bin because of my customers; therefore, we are pleading with ASWAMA and the government to urgently come to our rescue by relocating the waste box to a place far from living”, she said.

Another shop owner that deal on grocery who pleaded anonymity told our reporters that the harsh smell that the waste bin generates in the region cannot be over-emphasised.

“The refuse is affecting our children and we don’t even have anybody to complain to again.

“The last time I accused an ASWAMA official of the negligence of the area, he simply threatened to slap me. Me I don’t have strength to fight”, she explained.

Reacting, one of the official of ASWAMA told news48hrs.com that the resident of Kwata where the refuse box is dumped were accusing them wrongly.

“The refuse bin had been their before they started locating their shops and the government approved that location particularly for the waste box.

“If they want us to remove the refuse box, then, they should provide us with empty land to place it”, he contended.
