Sports writers lambasts FG over taking unilateral decision

Communique of the 53rd Full Council Meeting of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), held at the Yankari Games Reserve, Bauchi State between May 1 and May 5, 2017.

After exhaustive deliberations on the state of the Association and the state of the country’s sports, the SWAN Full Council:

1. Frowned at the steady dilapidation of sports facilities across the country, reminding governments at all levels that any investment in sports development is no waste because the sector alone if properly managed is capable of engaging the teeming Nigerian youths positively and productively;

2. Called on the sports establishment and corporate community to pay greater attention to schools and grassroots sports as they are the bedrock of the country’s sports development and future podium success;

3. While commending the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for a brilliant outing by the Super Eagles so far in the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign, charged the NFF to do everything possible to ensure that the Super Eagles win the next qualifier against Cameroon in August and enjoined the Federal Government to ensure that all necessary logistics support is provided the team to excel;

4. Rejected the exclusion of SWAN in the constitution of the boards of sports federations and urges the Honourable Minister of Youths and Sports, the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), and relevant organs in the sports family to see sports writers as equal partners with enormous experience and capacity to contribute in sports development and take steps to provide a space for representation of SWAN in the board of federations and others sports bodies at the national and state levels;

5. Frowned at the failure of the sports authorities to stage the National Sports Festival since it was last held in Lagos in 2012, and reminded the sports authorities on the place of the festival in the discovery and development of athletes and urged the Ministry of Sports to take urgent steps to bring back the festival;

6. Inaugurated a five-member SWAN Statutes Review Committee headed by Sunny Ogele with Yusuf Isah, Mohammed Mansur and Gabriel Nwanetanya as other members and Jude Opara as Secretary.

7. Inaugurated also a committee to facilitate the participation of members in the coverage of national and international sporting events. The committee is headed by Kayode Adeniyi, with Fred Edoreh, Thadeus Yilmen, Chigozie Chukwuleta, Anthony Obaseki, George Ameli and Yinka Owolewa as other members;

8. Expressed gratitude to the Bauchi State chapter of SWAN for its hospitality to members during the meeting, and also praised the Bauchi State Government for its efforts in sports development as well as concerted efforts to sustain the Yankari Games Reserve.

9. Observed a one-minute silence in honour of late Clinton Thompson, a former SWAN National Vice-President (South-South),  late Eddie Akalonu of Lagos SWAN and other departed colleagues
