Scrap out INEC now, NULGE charges government

Raymond Ozoji, Awka

The Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees  ( NULGE  )  have called for the abolition of state independent electoral commissions  .

The union said such electoral commissions should be expunged completely from the constitution because the state electoral bodies are often hijacked and manipulated by state governments  .

Disclosing this to our correspondent during an exclusive interview in Awka, Anambra state NULGE president comrade Jerry Nnubia stated that local government is the government closet to the people but expressed worry that they have not been empowered because according to him, local governments require some level of financial and administrative autonomy to operate effectively  .

Nnubia further disclosed that NULGE has been in the vanguard of agitations for local government autonomy;  as it is a constitutional matter because he said that the constitution made provisions for democratically elected local government officials .

The Anambra NULGE president said what exists in the 774 local government areas in the country is a situation where state governments have hijacked the running of local governments thereby making the local government system inefficient and ineffective  .
He said that the issue of local government autonomy was long overdue and equally chided state house of assembly members whom he said were supposed to represent the people as well as join the quest for local government autonomy but on the contrary,  serving the interest of their 'paymaster' to the detriment of the generality of the people who elected them into office  .

According to him, NULGE and other labour unions have continued to clamour for the Independent National Electoral Commission ( INEC ) to conduct all elections in the country and that state independent electoral commissions should be expunged from the constitution adding that elections into local government councils should be done simultaneously with national and state house of assembly elections to guarantee transparency, credibility and autonomy to execute constitutional mandate as well as resuscitate local government administration in the country
