How Anambra Female Speaker Survived Male Dominated Impeachment Ploy

Rt. Hon Rita Maduagwu

By Okechukwu Onuegbu
Feelers from the Anambra State House of Assembly last Thursday, 3rd November, 2016 indicated that the lawmakers were perfecting plans to impeach the Speaker, Rt. Hon Barr Rita Maduagwu.
Visiting the Assembly Complex at 12 noon on Thursday, our correspondent observed that the place was behoove of activities as usual, but the lawmakers were behind closed door meeting for over 3 hours before surfacing to the hallow chamber for business of the day.

It was learnt that the impeachment ploy was trending for long, and those behind it allegedly met at different locations in the state, including a hotel in Awka during which 21 out of 30 legislators appended their signatures in support of the impeachment plot.
However, on sitting for plenary, Speaker Maduagwu, after prayer, read some motions on notice, and ordered the House Majority Leader, Hon. Jideofor Okoye to call for an adjournment till next week, which was done, and they dismissed.
Speaking to, some of the arrowheads of the "Speaker Must Go" group noted that they stepped down the move on Thursday due to last minute hitch, although the plan remains on course, because they have already penciled down Hon. Ikem Uzoezie, representing Aguata 2 state constituency as Maduagwu’s replacement.
It was further uncovered that the lawmakers, comprising twenty-eight members of the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, and two from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, were disenchanted with the speaker over her alleged selfishness, hobnobbing with the state governor, collecting pecks of offices and turning down any attempt to ‘harrass’ the governor to also look in the way of members for settlement.
One of our sources said, “She hardly carries members along while accessing government largesse. But each time they want to remove the Speaker, some members would side her not because they like her, but because these crop of lawmakers are not very well empowered, so whatever they got, they get swayed. It is no more a mere threat. I think they mean it this time. And I think they have gotten a sponsor to perfect their plan. This sponsor is aiming at frustrating Governor Obiano’s second tenure ambition.”
