Gov. Ugwuanyi, NHRC Move to Audit Enugu Prison

Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State yesterday acompanied the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) team led by its Executive Secretary, Prof. Bem Angwe to Enugu Prisons Command.
The commission was in Enugu on a prison audit exercise to examine the general condition of the prison inmates, the prison officials and prison infrastructure and make appropriate recommendations to the authorities.

Gov. Ugwuanyi who trekked through the popular ogbete main market road, Enugu with the members of the delegation to pay homage to the traders and onlookers, also went inside the prison cells to addresss the inmates and access their condition. The governor called for the relocation of the Enugu Prison and promised to implement the recommendations of the Committee that require the intervention of the state government. The audit exercise a nutshell, will examine the access to justice issues and welfare of both awaiting trial inmates and convicts and make appropriate recommendations to authorities and stakeholders.
Prof. Angwe commended Gov. Ugwuanyi for his humble disposition and selfless service to humanity, adding that the commission was impressed by his remarkable achievements in Enugu State in the face of present economic hardship in the country.
