Following the Anambra State Governor, Chief Willie Obiano’s recent statewide broadcast wherein he promised to provide automatic employment into the state civil service of the physically challenged university graduates of the state origin, some civil society activists have made case for human and capital development of the disables.

Speaking to, Uche Madubuko, a Senior Programme Manager (governance) and Social Development Consultant, while lauding the policy, advised Obiano to surround himself with those that understand the economy of the state so as to achieve it.

Madubuko, who noted that involving the people with special needs into active space in the labour force will contribute significantly in advancing the state economy and that of the nation at large, however urged him to provide enabling environment for them to thrive in agricultural subsectors like livestock, animal husbandry, crop production, and others by providing them with loans, veteran doctors, silos, fertilizers and so on.

The activist, who also explained that the disables from Ogbaru, Anambra East and West, amongst other agrarian communities were good in advancing agricultural sector if empowered, added that most of them can actively function on cottage industry; textile, art, painting and craft if engaged with leverage and market for their produce.

On transport, Madubuko said he was optimistic that they can be actively involved in Automobile such as commercial Keke, motorcycle and taxi driving if provided with the needful like in China.

Also speaking, the National Coordinator, Association of People Living With Sickle Cell Disorder (APLSCD), Aisha Edward appealed to the governor to provide investigative and monitoring team as a mechanism to checkmate and safeguard the policy from been hijacked by unsuspecting political aides.

Edward, who lamented that some good policies of the government have been relegated by bad managers called aides and sycophants, like those that have scammed her people over frivolities, also reiterated the needs for the government to make known what or who is a disable, for transparence, effective execution and sustenance of the project like her group which constantly audit and publicise its financial account for the public.

That was even as she thanked the Governor’s wife, Chief Ebelechukwu Obiano for always identifying with her people, the sicklers in all her training and empowerment.

She therefore urged governor Obiano to identify with APLSCD on the employment and empowerment opportunities as they are physically challenged but most times discriminated against when such policies surfaced, even as she said they are in need of a bus to ease their transportation cost and suffering from ulcerian cancer. recalls that Governor Obiano while addressing journalist at the state Governor’s lodge, said that he would automatically absorb the physically challenged graduates of Anambra State extraction into the state civil service in order to encourage Anambrarians living with disabilities to embrace education as the key to a better life.

He also vowed, “We shall work closely with the United Nations Development Programme to provide training and empowerment programmes for the uneducated physically disabled members of our society. We shall intensify efforts to tap into the numerous social programs at the World Bank, such as Community Social and Development Programmes, Youth Employment and Social Support Operation and the Rural Access Mobility Programme.

“We have also aggressively keyed into all the social investment programmes available at the Federal Government, mainly the Home Grown School Feeding and the Conditional Cash Transfer Programmes. Working closely with the FG, we hope to commence these programmes in the next two months.”
