By Okechukwu Onuegbu

The joy of beggars in Anambra State knew no bound on Saturday as the St. Vincent De Paul society of St. Patrick’s Catholic Cathedral in Awka distributed what they termed Easter food items and other valuables.

Describing the beneficiaries as “our Masters”, Brother Victor-Mary Anwuna explained that they were free gift from patriotic parishioners aimed at celebrating the downtrodden in their midst.

Here him: “This is our job. We do it mostly on Easters and Christmas seasons. We also use to visit and settle hospital bills, etc for the poorest of the poor at hospitals without minding what religious or ethnic background of the beneficiaries. But mind you, we don’t use to advertise or publicize our activities like this because is our duty. And we don’t call the beneficiaries beggars but our masters. They own us.

“But this particular one is special because it is happening now we are celebrating St. Patrick’s conference…Although most of these free gifts were donated by individuals, some were funded directly and indirectly by our members”, Anwuna concluded while calling for support from people.

One of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Uche Okoye prayed God to bless the members of the society and other contributors, and vowed to judiciously utilise them.
