World Red Cross Day: Anambra RCS Tasks Gen. Buhari, APC to be Magnanimous in Victory

As Nigeria Red Cross Society (NRCS) join their counterparts worldwide to commemorate this year’s World Red Cross Day, Anambra State Council of the society has urged the President-Elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari and his party, the All Progressive Congress (APC), to guard the victory jealously and avoid any conduct that will obliterate the present enviable global democratic position.

The State Chairman of NRCS, Hon. Paul Obidigwe, who made the disclosure while speaking on the theme for “2015 World Red Cross Day” held at Awka on Friday centered on the seven fundamental principles of “Humanity, Impartiality, Neutrality, Independence, Voluntary Service, Unity, and Universality, told the incoming government to see Nigeria and Nigerians as their constituency.

Hon. Obidigwe, represented by the State Vice-Chairman, Prof. Peter Katchy (Gold Medalist), further appealed to APC to continue to conduct itself with decorum, peace and humility with a view to entrench internal democracy and good governance the country is yearning for.

He added that the abundance human and natural resources of the country, the tenets of democracy, and fundamental human rights should also be uphold in the highest premium by all politicians and leaders.

NRCS also commended the outgoing President Goodluck Jonathan for accepting defeat in good fate and charged politicians in the country to emulate him.

“Nigeria Red Cross Society Anambra State humbly conveys our hearty commendations and felicitations to His Excellency President Goodluck Jonathan for moving Nigeria up to join the league of civilized democracies in the civilized developed world by graciously accepting the electoral victory of Gen. Muhammadu Buhari in the just concluded Presidential election of 28th March, 2015”.

“Sequel to the peaceful conduct and acceptance, Nigeria has become a reference point, touch bearer and role model to rule of law and democratic principles in the comity of nations of the world. At end of his tenure, it would be said of him, Goodluck Ebele Azikiwe Jonathan, A Patriot, Man of Peace and Honour was there”, the state Chairman concluded.

The council equally commended the Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano on what they termed “evolved virile, erudite and articulate strategies to change the fortunes of the people of Anambra State in order to achieve much desired Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) which central to world economic and social order”, and in a related development, appealed to Obiano to accept their proposal to confer him and his wife, Ebele with Grand Patron and Mother-General of Nigeria Red Cross Society Anambra State respectively as demanded and in conjunction to the state government giant strides on health, security, among other sectors of economy.

Responding, Governor Willie Obiano, represented by the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joe Akabuike praised NRCS for their pivotal roles in serving lives and properties of the citizenry selflessly, and pledged to hearken to their various demands as soon as possible.

Obiano had earlier informed the council that his government was determined to secure lives and properties especially on the terms of emergencies, as the administration has upgraded some general hospitals in the state to Special centers, bought 17 flying boats, ambulances, and others.
