family of eight has been displaced by a fire outbreak which razed ...Breaking News- Fire Outbreak in Apapa, Lagos

There was a palpable tension at Nnewi, in Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra state, yesterday following a mid afternoon inferno that gutted more than 20 shops at Old Motorcycle Spare Parts section of the Nnewi main market.
According to an eye witness account, the fire incident may not be unconnected with a surge that accompanied power supply in the market.
Orient Daily observed that items worth millions of naira were damaged by the inferno which included machine parts and stalls.
One of the victims and a dealer at the market who simply identified himself as Mr. Nwagba claimed he  lost millions of naira worth of properties to the fire incident regretting that all efforts to get the attention of the fire fighting officers in the town which is incidentally located in the market proved abortive as they complained that their water pumping machine is not functional.

He pointed out that they quickly had to contact those ones in Onitsha and Obosi but before they could get to the affected market, according to him, unquantifiable damages had already been done to people’s properties.

The Sole Administrator of Nnewi North Local Government Area, Hon. Chukwuemeka Ojukwu (Jnr), during his on the spot assessment visit to the market expressed his sympathy with the traders who he said have lost millions of naira in the incident.

Hon. Ojukwu, however, expressed concern that most of the traders in the market are not on any form of insurance policy which would have help them get some respite. He also noted that some illegal structures have been constructed in the market which according to him, makes it practically impossible for vehicular entry into the section of the market.

The sole administrator who later paid a surprise visit to the fire service station in the market noted that those that are charged with the responsibility of fighting fire in the industrial town are flat footed based on their dirty environment . He also pointed out that the open space in front of the station has been converted to a loading point which according to him gives an impression of the state of their un-preparedness.
He declared emphatically that he would take up the issue of the leadership of the fire fighters with the state governor, Chief Wilie Obiano for the purposes of effecting some changes.

“ They said their pumping machine has not been working for the past three years but they have been picking their salaries and sleep off their time here. So, I will also discuss with the state governor on the need to make insurance policy mandatory for the traders to avoid a situation where there would be total losers.

The President General of the Nnewi traders,  Muosom Edward while commenting on the incident, thanked the sole administrator, Chief Ojukwu for his concern most especially his plans to effect changes in the fire service .
