The Anambra Road Traffic Management Agency (ASTA) has removed over 150 vehicles that are either rickety or posing traffic or security risk on major high ways across the state.

The Permanent Secretary in the state Ministry of Transport, Mr. Nwabuonu Ogbaji, made the disclosure in an interview with newsmen in Awka.

Recalled that the agency commenced the campaign on May 12, following a directive by the state governor, Dr Willie Obiano, that all rickety vehicles should be removed within 48 hours.

“The governor is concerned over the safety of the lives of road users; the flow of traffic and making sure that avoidable accident are avoided.

“We have succeeded in creating that awareness for over one month in Awka, Onitsha, Nnewi and Ekwulobia areas of the state,” Ogbaji said.
The permanent secretary also said that the exercise was a way of giving the major towns an aesthetic look that the people would be proud of.

He noted that the special task force set up for the purpose comprising the police, military, FRSC and ASTA had been able to remove 65 vehicles in Awka, 45 in Onitsha, 25 in Nnewi and 15 in Ekwulobia.

“When we decongest, it is at a cost of towing, demurrage and other penalties.

“According to the law establishing Anambra Road Traffic Management Agency, after six months, we have the right to auction the vehicles where the owner refuses to claim their vehicles.

“We will not use our government offices as dumping ground. Those vehicles that are auctionable will be auctioned while those that are scraps will be disposed-off for recycling,” he said.

The permanent secretary assured that the decongestion exercise would be sustained until members of the public learn how to handle their broken down vehicles.

Although, he stressed that the essence was not to raise revenue, the state government had realized about N500, 000 from defaulters who pay directly into government coffers.
