Communal crashes claims two lives, injure others in Ebony state

At least two persons feared dead, scores of others injured during a crisis which
erupted in Ishiagu Community in Ivo Local Government Area of Ebonyi
State, while multi-million naira properties got destroyed.
Confirming the incident to newsmen, Ebonyi State Commissioner for Economic Empowerment and Poverty Reduction, Chief James Aro Nweke, who hails from the crisis ridden area expressed regret and shock over the wanton killings and destruction in the community.

In a report dated 2nd of May 2014 addressed to the Secretary to Ebonyi State Government, Chief Fidelis Mbam, Chief Aroh Nweke said the recent incident was outcome of clandestine meetings of some persons in the community.

"On the 22nd April, the group alleged that one Chukwu Okafor, from Okue Community was responsible for some misfortunes of some people in Ishiagu, on the basis of witchcraft".

"Whereupon, they constituted some youths, broke into the man's house, brought out his properties and set it ablaze. From there, they started going from one community to the other to attack their targets".

Nweke stated that Amaonye Okue and Amaeze communities were the places Mr. Adindu Ebia and Mr. Simon Njoku respectively were murdered while Okue Community was where Chukwu Okafor"s house was razed and his properties burnt.

He called for the arrest and prosecution of all the people who planned and executed the orgy of
violence on innocent people in the area stressing that the Co-ordinators of Echiele and Ivo development Centers should be summoned to explain their roles in the crisis.

He warned that if urgent steps were not taken to stop the violence, the crisis may lead to the killings of more persons.

Similarly, the Ebonyi State Chairman, Center for Democracy, CD, Comrade Onu Ogbonnaya Onu also
expressed regret that a group known as Chukwuma Aro ECOMOG boys arrogated to themselves the roles of Police and Judiciary in Ngwogwo village.

According to him: "hell was let loose in Ishiagu and anarchy spread over the land. Some group of boys accused some men of practicing Voodoo and diabolical tendencies and arrested the men, judged them, stripped them naked, beat them up, set their houses ablaze, sent them out of the community".
"This barbaric operation kept on and was extended to another village, Ngwogwo village Unity Square where they summoned one Kenneth Ochuba and his brothers and were shown a list purportedly seen in the custody of the Native Doctor. The group of boys threatened to razed down the 3
bedroom flat belonging to Kenneth Ochuba".

Although it occurred last month, the state Police spokesman, ASP Chris Anyanwu is yet to comment on the matter.
